How Is Lead Paint Removed from Buildings?
There are a few methods used to remove lead paint. The most affordable method involves coating, rather than completely removing the paint. This process, known as encapsulation, involves the application of a coating that creates a watertight seal over the lead-based paint. This protective coating keeps the paint from peeling and chipping, to minimize surface contact with it.
People on a tight budget may wish to simply cover the lead paint with wallpaper to new drywall. They may cover window sills and trim with aluminum or vinyl. This is a temporary fix, as the lead paint will be exposed once again when these coverings are removed. In addition, resale of your home may be difficult if you have not properly addressed lead paint.
Total Removal is the most complete (and the most expensive, short of removing walls and doors and replacing with new products) method to eradicate lead paint.
